Meet Rachael | Refocus Therapy Colorado

At Refocus Therapy, therapy is not about fixing what is “wrong” with you — it’s about understanding what has shaped you, recognizing your strengths, and creating space for clarity, growth, and meaningful change.

I provide therapy for teens and adults in Colorado who are experiencing anxiety, overwhelm, burnout, perfectionism, or a sense of feeling stuck or disconnected from themselves.

My work is especially focused on supporting high achievers, athletes, and individuals navigating pressure, identity, and life transitions.

Therapy in Colorado for Anxiety, Burnout, and High-Pressure Lives

Many of the people I work with are:

  • high achievers who feel constantly “on”

  • teens and young adults struggling with pressure and expectations

  • athletes navigating performance, identity, or transitions

  • individuals experiencing anxiety, burnout, or emotional overwhelm

  • LGBTQ+ individuals exploring identity, belonging, and self-understanding

Even when working one-on-one, I consider the broader relational, family, and systemic factors that shape your experience.

My Approach as a Therapist

I use a relational, strength-based, and culturally responsive approach to therapy.

This means:

  • We look at patterns, not just symptoms

  • We explore both your internal experience and your external environment

  • We focus on understanding, not judgment

  • We move at a pace that feels safe and sustainable for you

Therapy with me is collaborative, grounded, and real.

I don’t assume — I ask. I don’t label — I get curious.

My Clinical Focus

I support clients navigating:

  • Anxiety and chronic overthinking

  • Burnout and emotional exhaustion

  • Perfectionism and high-achievement pressure

  • Identity exploration and life transitions

  • Relationship and family dynamics

  • Stress related to performance, school, sport, career or parenting

What You Can Expect in Therapy

Clients often come to me when they are tired of holding everything together on their own.

In our work together, you can expect:

  • a grounded, supportive relationship

  • space to slow down and make sense of what you’re feeling

  • practical tools for emotional regulation

  • deeper insight into patterns that keep you stuck

  • support in building self-trust and clarity

Why I Became a Therapist

I am deeply interested in how people make meaning of their experiences — especially during periods of stress, transition, or emotional overwhelm.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked as an award-winning photographer and photojournalist, documenting real people and real stories. That experience shaped how I see people: with curiosity, respect, and attention to the full complexity of their lived experience.

I was also a Division I athlete and team captain, which gave me firsthand experience with performance pressure, discipline, identity, and the mental demands that come with high expectations.

These experiences influence how I understand anxiety, perfectionism, and the pressure to keep going even when things feel heavy internally.

Credentials & Transparency

I am a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern in my clinical year of graduate school, providing therapy under the supervision of an AAMFT-approved supervisor.

I currently see clients in Colorado, with telehealth therapy available for individuals across the state.

Therapeutic Approaches

My work is grounded in a combination of evidence-based and relational approaches. I adapt therapy to each individual rather than using a one-size-fits-all model.

Depending on your needs, I may integrate:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – to explore and shift unhelpful thought patterns that contribute to anxiety, stress, and self-criticism

  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills – to support emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal skills, and coping with overwhelm

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – to help you stay grounded in your values and take meaningful action toward the life you want, even when facing stress, pressure, or self-doubt

  • Narrative Therapy – to help separate your identity from problems and explore meaning in your lived experience

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS-informed) – to understand different internal “parts” with curiosity and compassion

  • Strength-Based Therapy – to identify and build on existing resilience, values, and capacities

I also maintain a relational and systems-based lens, meaning I consider how relationships, environment, identity, and larger systems influence emotional well-being.
